Theory & Composition

Music Theory

Lower age limit: Year 5 as a separate subject (no upper limit)

Levels taught: Beginner to Grade 5

Styles taught: Classical and Popular Music Theory

Those studying classical music theory are likely to follow either the ABRSM or Trinity Guildhall syllabus. Those with a particular interest in composition should consider the LCM course as it is weighted in this direction. For ABRSM practical examinations at Grade 6 and above, and LCM practical examinations at Grade 8 and above, a pass in Grade 5 Theory is needed; the Grade 5 pass can be from any of these three boards and is interchangeable (e.g. someone wanting to take ABRSM Grade 6 could take LCM Grade 5 Theory).

You can also study Popular Music Theory; the theory studied in this strand will be of particular interest to those following jazz or popular practical lessons. It is highly relevant to these genres and can often be applied practically for improvisation purposes at all levels.

Composition

Lower age limit: Year 6 (no upper limit)

Levels taught: Beginner to Advanced

Styles taught: Most!

Those opting to study composition will develop their skills practically. Practical tasks, often related to their instrument or to an ensemble with which they are involved, will be set alongside theory training, with a focus on harmony. There are often opportunities for performances of works composed, and the emphasis is very much on following the interests of the individual composer.

There are opportunities for examinations in composition; particularly:

LCM Grades 2, 4, 6, and 8; ALCM, LLCM, and FLCM;VCM Silver and Gold Medals; DipVCM, AVCM and LVCM;NCM DipNCM, ANCM, LNCM and FNCM;ICMA DipMusComp and FDipMusComp.
